Offshore Jobs - Easy Requirements And Great Advancement Opportunities
Getting offshore jobs is not tough, as there are no difficult-to-meet requirements. However, one has to be mentally strong to go into this line of work. The person who is employed on an oil rig has to, literally live on the sea. The oil rig is like a floating city on the sea. The co-workers are the only companions. Workers are usually employed on a 14 or 21 days rotation shift. In other words, a person works for either 14 days or 21 days straight, and then takes a few days off. This explains the reason why offshore jobs are only for the mentally strong.
Apart from mental resilience, one also has to be physically fit to work in an oil rig. Since the workers have to work in very harsh conditions, they have to be physically fit. Applicants applying for work in oil rigs have to undergo physical examination. They might also be asked to take a drug test. A full body X-ray is also conducted. The applicant must be atleast 18 years of age, to be eligible to work in an oil rig. Though there are no upper limits, most offshore workers are 27 years of age.
For entry level, one does not require any specific experience. However, your experience does add to your qualification. Again, there are no specific educational requirements for entry level jobs in the oil rig. Most companies train the newly hired for the job. Therefore, they look an ability to learn, and a hard worker in a prospective employee. Some of the jobs in the oil rigs have specific educational requirements. For instance, a mud engineer and controller, does require a high school graduation, at the least.
Offshore jobs offer great advancement opportunities to the ones who are committed, and ready to work hard. These companies have great training programs, which allow the workers to learn new skills and move up the ladder. Moreover, there are various certification programs that workers can attend and improve their future job prospects.
Besides great advancement opportunities, these jobs offer great pay also. The average remuneration of an oil rig worker is around $70,000 per annum. When you consider the fact that an offshore job is only seasonal, this is not a low pay scale. In other words, only require workers to work for around six or seven months in a year. The fact that an average worker in other industries only earns around $35,000 per annum, working in an oil rig is quite beneficial.
What are some of the jobs that are available in an oil rig? It would be unwise to think that oil rigs only offer work for engineers. Storekeepers, painter, rig medic, chief engineer, floor men, sub sea engineer, rig welder, safety man, crane operator, driller, watch stander, electrician, and heavy equipment operator are just some of the offshore jobs that one can apply for.
